Day 7 - Nov 10 - Texarkana to Fort Worth
We slept great again and we were about 50 feet from the highway Frontage Street and maybe 100 feet from the multi-lane freeway. We are used to the sound of traffic as on our third floor bedroom at home we can hear the Queensway at night, which is pretty quiet late at night and is about a quarter km away from us.
It was a crisp clear morning and it was like that all day. First on the list today was a car wash to wash off whatever spray that landed on our car while it was parked the evening before. The car wash was $1.75 per three minutes and it took 6 minutes to soap, wash, rinse the car off. The car with no spots looks fine now.
We started on the high way around 9 am and we had a couple of hundred of miles to drive. Texarkana is right on the state line between Arkansas and Texas and the State Line Road was the next set of lights. It is kind of an interesting place.
The drive from there to Dallas was fine, lots of heavy traffic. Once in Texas there were Great and Cattle Egrets seen from the highway, Red tailed and Red shouldered Hawks frequently found on posts along the highway. There were even Scissor tailed Flycatchers on the hydro lines. It was as if the birds were saying "welcome to Texas". We stopped for lunch just east of Dallas at a park near a lake (I have forgotten the name of it) and there were Northern Mockingbirds and Northern Cardinals and American Coots and Mallards all enjoying the 10 degree weather.
We continued on to Fort Worth and found out that Highway 30 outside of Dallas and into Arlington was CLOSED. This is a major east/west highway and it was CLOSED on a Saturday afternoon. This is like closing 20 miles of the Queensway on a Saturday. There were detour signs but not enough of them. There was tons of traffic that moved into streets and it took us two hours to get through that mess and find the onramp where Highway 30 reopened very close to Forth Worth, about 11 miles away. It took no time to reach Cassi's place.
The kids had done a day trip and were on their way home. Norm and I decided to drive up the street and stop at a favourite ice cream place, Curly's, to enjoy a Sundae in the afternoon sunshine. It was a perfect way to start our visit in Fort Worth. Sitting outside and eating ice cream in November! At Cassi's place a White winged Dove was on the hydro lines welcoming us to Fort Worth.
We then went back to the house and watched for the kid's car and waved to them all as they turned in. Lu was sitting in the back and smiling from ear to ear. This really was the real reason for the trip. Of course we wanted to spend time with Cassi and Matt but Lu turned three!! We celebrated Lu's birthday at supper time and he was excited with all the gifts we brought from his cousins and us. Lu stayed up later and we read some of his new Super Heroes story book.
It was good to catch up and spend the evening with the kids also.
We made it!,.... is how Norm and I feel tonight. It is funny with almost two days of visiting places during the seven day trip, it did not seem like a long trip to me.
